How MotorMeter calculates its real-time estimates.

How the counters work

MotorMeter does not receive live data from emergency services or hospitals. Instead, it uses the most recent available annual totals from government statistical agencies and interpolates them across the calendar year.

The formula for each counter is:

counter = Math.floor( (annualTotal / 31,536,000) × secondsElapsedSinceJan1 )

Counters reset to zero at 00:00:00 UTC on January 1st each year and increment continuously until December 31st. The rate is constant throughout the year — seasonal variation is not modelled.

This approach is the same used by Worldometers and similar statistical counters. The figures represent a statistical expectation, not confirmed real-time reports.

Vehicle Miles Travelled (VMT) risk rates

Raw death counts are heavily influenced by population size and the amount of travel in a country. The VMT rate (deaths per billion vehicle miles travelled) normalises for exposure — it tells you how dangerous a mode of transport is per unit of distance travelled.

For cars and motorcycles, the rate is expressed as deaths per billion vehicle miles travelled (VMT). For pedestrians, it is expressed as deaths per billion pedestrian-kilometres walked, as pedestrian exposure is typically measured in distance walked rather than vehicle miles.

VMT rates are static figures sourced from national transport agencies and the International Transport Forum (ITF). They are not recalculated in real time.
